Fire crews contained a small blaze within the transfer station approximately nine kilometres northeast of Jasper on Monday.
Parks Canada and the Jasper Fire Department responded in the late afternoon. Smoke was visible from Highway 16.
After containing the wildfire, crews then focused on extinguishing the fire within the perimeter, according to an update just before 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Jasper Fire Department was reportedly assessing the presence of hazardous materials in the recycling piles and determining the best method of extinguishing them.
“Thanks to early public reporting, Parks Canada fire crews and the Jasper Fire Department were able to respond quickly,” Parks Canada stated in a social media post.
“Timely reporting and response time are crucial, especially in windy conditions.”
There was no word on what caused the wildfire.
