Lakeland Soccer kicks off outdoor season with league play

COLD LAKE - The rain did not let up through 90 minutes of play on May 7, but the U17 boys' soccer teams from St. Paul and Bonnyville hit the turf anyways at the Thomas Varughese Field in Cold Lake.

While most other games were cancelled across the Lakeland due to the rainy conditions, the U17 game went on, with St. Paul taking a 1-0 lead to start. But, as the rain continued to fall, Bonnyville would capitalize on a few chances and win the match 2-1.

League games across the region kicked off the outdoor season earlier in the week, and will continue on throughout May and June, leading up to Lakeland Cup competitions in Cold Lake and Vegreville later in the season.

This year's Tier IV rural provincials will also be held in the Lakeland at the Lions Soccer Fields in St. Paul, July 5-7.

A soccer fest is also scheduled to take place in Lac La Biche this weekend, May 10 and 11, followed by mini-tournaments in St. Paul, Bonnyville and Vermilion throughout May and June.
