A 34-year-old Kehewin woman was handed a fine after pleading guilty to possession of stolen property.

During her appearance in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse on Tuesday, Jan. 22, Margaret G. McGilvery was sentenced to pay a $750 fine for her connection to a stolen vehicle.

On Oct. 3, 2018, Bonnyville RCMP were called about three people on a rural property abandoning their vehicle and stealing another.

The GMC Sierra was seen at the Kehewin General Store. RCMP attended and viewed the store's surveillance footage, which confirmed McGilvery was one of the passengers.

Crown prosecutor Jordan Kerr expressed how vehicle theft is a major issue in the area, specifically for rural properties.

Acting duty counsel Hart Spencer explained how the circumstances in McGilvrey's life caused her to "come off the rails."

He noted her sister's murder and McGilvrey's own near-death experience, among other issues, drove her to self-medicate using crystal methamphetamine. However, he added, she was accepting responsibility for her actions.

The mother of three apologized to the court before Honourable Judge Kathleen Williams sentenced her to pay a $750 fine.
