The Bonnyville Voyageurs are looking for volunteers to help break the record for the world’s longest flag football game.

The event would run from Aug. 12 to 19 at Walsh Field, and there’s a place for volunteers both on and off the field.

Voyageurs head coach Larry Godziuk is looking for around 30 volunteers interested in being a part of the teams, and around 60 support staff.

“We haven’t had a lot of interest,” he said. “Right now, we only have five players signed up to be part of the teams.”

Godziuk plans to reach out to the Voyageurs and the Cold Lake Royals to see if any would be interested in participating in the game.

Godziuk came up with the idea as an alternative to the usual fundraising done for the Scott MacDonald Memorial, a tournament named after a Voyageur who lost his battle to cancer in 2010. This year, he wanted to try something a little different.

“I wanted to try something that I think we could have a chance of breaking,” explained Godziuk.

Previously, the Voyageurs have fundraised for the Scott MacDonald Memorial alongside the Renegades and the Bandits through a football tournament during the regular reason. Last year’s donations were over $12,000 for cancer research.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records guidelines, in order to break the record, support volunteers must be present for four hours at a time. Players are allotted five minutes of rest for every hour played, and these breaks can be saved for six hours to result in a half-hour break. Players must remain at Walsh Field during the whole game, and must be at least 16-years-old.

The current record for the longest flag football game is held by the Moose Jaw Touch Football League. In 2015, they played a game that was just over 62 hours.

Those interested in volunteering can contact Godziuk at 780-812-8925, or by email at [email protected].
