Understanding Canada’s criminal justice system can be complicated.

A man who feels he is on the verge of loosing everything was sentenced to 30 days in custody.

Devin Patrick Alyward offered the court three guilty pleas on Tuesday, July 17. Assault, mischief, and breaching his conditions will be added to his criminal record after an incident on June 11.

Police were called to a Bonnyville address on 53 Ave., where Alyward's girlfriend claims he had assaulted her.

She told police he grabbed her arm and back hard enough to leave bruises, shaking her, and yelling at her.

Less than two weeks later, local RCMP were once again called to the same address on 53 Ave. It was almost midnight when police responded to Alyward at the residence intoxicated, after being released on a recognizance relating to the assault with conditions not to contact the complainant, or be within a 200-metre radius of the residence.

"He was making contact that was unwelcome," detailed Crown prosecutor Terry Mazeroll.

The 28-year-old has been in custody since his arrest, and appeared via CCTV to speak to his charges.

Honourable Judge Kathleen Williams said it was "aggravating that less than two weeks later he was back at the residence."

She sentenced Alyward to 30 days in custody. He was released from prison on a time-served basis.
