The student charged with bringing a gun to Bonnyville Centralized High School (BCHS) still awaits sentencing after adourning his matters at a recent court appearance.

On Thursday, Sept. 27, the youth, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, attended the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse for sentencing, but adjourned his matters one more time for the review of the pre-sentence report and facts assessment.

On May 1, the BCHS student pled guilty to possession of a prohibited weapon with ammunition. He adjourned his matters to July  23 for the completion of a pre-sentence report. During this court appearance, the matters were adjourned further after Honourable Judge Kathleen Williams requested a facts assessment also be done.

The charges relate to an incident that took place on March 12, when the student was witnessed bringing a gun to school.

The incident wasn’t reported to police until the following morning (March 13), when the principal contacted Bonnyville RCMP.

When officers attended the high school, they took multiple statements, which indicated a student had brought a 44 Ruger handgun to school in his backpack, along with two rounds of ammunition.

The youth has been placed on conditions not to attend the high school.

His next court appearance is Oct. 25.
