RCMP Press Release

The Bonnyville RCMP have taken drugs out of the hands of one man after a successful traffic stop.

Police were conducting patrols on 51 Ave. in Bonnyville on Sept. 13 when they came across a vehicle with its lights off.

It was around 3:15 a.m. when officers arrested the suspended driver, who had lied about his identity.

"The driver tried to give a fake name to the officer, but they knew who he was from previous dealings with him, so that didn't get too far," explained Sgt. Sarah Parke, acting detachment commander for the Bonnyville RCMP.

A search incidental to the Elk Point man's arrest led to finding drugs and a prohibited weapon.

The 37-year-old was wanted on warrants, and is facing numerous charges including unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of methamphetamine, driving while disqualified, identity fraud, and two counts of breaching his probation.

He was released from custody on a $3,000 no-cash bail, to appear in court on Sept. 18.

Heavier police presence in Glendon following a string of incidences

Residents in Glendon might notice the Bonnyville RCMP are hanging around a bit more, after a number of incidents in the village they believe to be related.

RCMP were dispatched to three separate incidences in Glendon on Sept. 6 and 7.

In two of the files, an unknown suspect tried to steal two trucks from residences on 49 Ave.

The third call was about a break and enter and mischief with attempted theft of another vehicle from the garage and a truck from the driveway of a residence on 52 St.

According to the RCMP, on two of the three trucks, the driver's side door lock and handle were damaged in order for the suspect to access inside of the vehicle.

The third truck had been left unlocked, and the suspect had attempted to steal the vehicle by putting a screwdriver into the ignition.

Parke said they have had similar incidences occur since then.

"There have been some attempted vehicle thefts in Glendon over a short period of time... we think it's the same suspect," she explained. "We're increasing our patrols in the Glendon area, and we're just urging residents to be vigilant with locking their vehicles, keeping lights on, and if they have a surveillance system to make sure it's working."

RCMP investigating suspicious behaviour

On Sept. 14, officers were searching for a suspect regarding an unrelated investigation when they came across three suspicious males.

"Of the trio, one took-off on foot into the bush. They hadn't committed any crime that we had witnessed, so we don't know why the one guy took off, but it raised some suspicion," said Parke.

The other two males provided false names, which wasn't determined until after the fact.

"We will be getting warrants for their arrest, and they will be charged with identity fraud," Parke added.

One of the suspects is a 37-year-old Kehewin male, while the other is a 38-year-old man from Fort Vermilion.

Further charges could come up pending the results of the investigation.

"Extremely intoxicated" male arrested after passing a school bus

Local RCMP received a 911 call about a pick-up truck that had sped past a school bus, and pulled into a private driveway before getting hung-up in the yard.

Witnesses said on Sept. 13, they saw a man climb out of the driver's seat, stumbling around.

When police responded, they located a 28-year-old Saddle Lake male "extremely intoxicated."

"He was arrested... and brought back to the detachment where he refused to provide breath samples," detailed Parke.

He has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, impaired driving, and refusing to provide breath samples.

"The vehicle he was driving wasn't registered, so he will be charged with that, and there was an open bottle of vodka in the vehicle within easy access of the driver," Parke said.
