Social media: ban or boon for society

With today’s technological advancement, the earth has certainly become a global village.

The characteristics of humans are more inclined towards interacting with new opportunities. However, the regular usage of certain things can lead a person to take some time away from it.

Will it be the same with social networking websites?

Before the social media channels became so common, technology was more in the hands of government or business elites. Along with the advancement in the mobile technology and global internet, one of the internet’s earliest social networking platforms was developed in 1995 by the name of ‘Classmates.’

Since then, various social media websites have been created like Friendster, Ryze, MySpace, LinkedIn, Orkut, Facebook, Instagram, the list goes on.

These platforms have a great role in connecting people all over the world, but at the same time, privacy is at stake.

It’s been over two decades since social media channels took over the role of socialization, and still people are using it extensively without getting tired of it.

Part of the reason behind this huge triumph for social media platforms over the last few decades is due to the importance that people gave to it. It’s true that it plays a big part in a person’s life, but the actual meaning of socializing is fading away in the process. Due to the digital friendship age, a person can’t even get a proper sense of human behaviour and their social abilities start diminishing.

My first digital family was on Orkut, which was a lower version of Facebook, giving users the ability to make new friends and keep the old ones. Even though Facebook and Orkut launched in 2004, just a  few months apart, worldwide users on Facebook increased everyday.

I was so fascinated with the idea of meeting and chatting with new people all over the world, posting photos, getting in touch with my old school mates, and much more. These features hooked me into a world where, except for few people, I had no idea who I was interacting with.

Using several social networking sites for over a decade, I feel that it won’t be an easy task to just let it go. A few months ago, I made an effort to stay away from Facebook and Instagram for a while, which obviously didn’t work.

A person usually gets tired of using the same thing everyday, but why isn’t it happening with social networking websites?

This is because of the lack of knowledge regarding the pros and cons of its usage. When a kid encounters social media, they don’t realize the negative impacts of it. In order to prevent them from becoming digitally addictive, parents and schools should offer some insight into a proper use of social media platforms.
