Alberta farmers are opening their gates to show the public where their food comes from.

From Aug. 18 to 19, agricultural producers from across the province will welcome families as part of the sixth annual Alberta Open Farm Days.

The event encourages residents to taste local foods and to explore the different farms within participating communities.

Several Lakeland-area businesses will be welcoming families with open arms.

K-Cow Ranch owner Janice Wirsta decided to participate to educate people on where their food comes from and about the rural way of life.

“It’s amazing how many people from the city don’t understand or know where their food comes from,” she explained.

K-Cow Ranch, located in Elk Point, plans to have a hands-on tour for families. They’ll have the chance to see the life-cycle of calves at the farm.

“We’ll also have lots of photo opportunities with livestock,” she said. “It’s not just going to be about the big animals, but a chance to experience what my girls experienced as they grew up on the farm.”

The ranch is going to be featuring a culinary event on the Sunday. Anyone interested is encouraged to register ahead of time.

“We’re going to be doing a farm fresh brunch, and it’s probably as close to from pasture to plate as you’re going to get.”

The menu will include garden fresh potatoes, cream and dill sauce fresh from the garden, beef raised on the farm, and other vegetables grown on-site.

To register for the brunch at the ranch, call 780-614-5995.

Eileen Wosnack, owner of the Fat Ewe Farm, is planning on hosting an outdoor market over the weekend. She hopes it will encourage attendees to shop locally.

“I’m trying to get people to think differently about shopping, to get them to shop at the farms for food or crafts right in their own community, and to draw people in to allow them to meet people who make things in the community,” expressed Wosnack.

There are still spaces available for the market, and those interested can call 780-614-4733.

On the Saturday, Wosnack is planning tours through her garden every two hours, and will be showcasing the farm’s free-range animals.

Alberta Open Farms Days allows local participants, such as the Rocky Meadows Country Getaway, to showcase what their location offers.

Owner Lori Toker said they originally got involved with the event to let the public know they had Saskatoon berries for picking. The farm has participated in the event since it started in Alberta six years ago.

“It’s been busier every year,” she expressed. “Every year we see new faces, and more people.”

Orchard tours will be available at Rocky Meadows. Toker labels the trees beforehand to show people what fruits are available to be picked at their location. Families can also take part in sampling or hitting the greens on the mini-golf course.

Their location north of Bonnyville has made it difficult to let people know where they are, and Toker said events like Open Farms Days helps them reach the community.

“It’s always good to let people know that we’re out here anyway that we can, we can’t really put a sign on the street because we’re out in the country.”

Alberta Open Farm Days is a unique summertime event and gives people a chance to learn first-hand about the importance of Alberta farmers.
