The Bonnyville Dyanmo U13 and the Lakeland United U15 soccer teams came out on top at provincials.

The Dynamos have won three provincial silver medals in the past. Team captain Tanner Dadey said this year’s win was long overdue.

“It took too long,” explained Dadey, adding the team started working together well after the first tournament, and improved on their communication and team work.

Head coach Mike Pomerleau had the team focus on defence this season after their second place finishes, and teaching the players not to give up.

“It was trying to remind them it’s okay if things don’t go their way and you just have to battle through it and keep going,” he explained. “One way to make it go your way is to control the game, and not worry about anything else that’s going on.”

Pomerleau said the season started a little slow with a loss in their first match up, but they went on to have a very strong season with two silvers from tournaments and a gold.

“It was a really good year,” he noted. “We finished off with a bang because we won provincials.”

The Dynamos decided to test themselves by playing in a tier two league this season, and proved that they were ready to play on a higher level.

Pomerleau has been coaching some of the players for a few years. He saw significant improvements made by members of the team.

“We’ve come a long way and took some big steps. We saw some developments from everybody, and it was nice to see it all come together finally to see how far these guys have come,” he explained.

Dadey believes their previous years playing together and their friendships off the field helped them do well this season.

The successful participation in a higher tier has the Dynamos hoping to participate at a more advanced level next year. Pomerleau hopes to see the momentum from this year carry into next season.

“Hopefully, we move up a level down the road and see if these guys can continue to progress,” he said.

The Dynamos weren’t the only local team with a good season, and a gold win at provincials. The Lakeland United U15 also took home two silvers at tournaments, and a gold in provincials this season.

Defenseman Matthew Nunweiler was really happy with the medal count for the team this year, and was able to add a new win to his resume.

“I didn’t have a provincial win yet,” he recalled. “Getting it at a high level, it really felt great.”

Head coach Nicolas Lampron said the most important thing for their short season was getting the players to play the same way, and getting the team to come together.

“The guys were really good and got along really well,” he noted.

Nunweiler said, “Everyone on the team was willing to be team players.”

Lampron has been growing the team over the last couple of years with players coming from all over the Lakeland. He said his team this year was dedicated to improving their game.

“We had a group of players that had the ability to win.”

The eight-week season wasn’t “really that long for them to come together and be successful like they did,” Lampron said.

Much like the Dynamos, Lampron is hoping for another successful team next season.
