Old St. Nick is taking time out of his busy schedule to check-in on the boys and girls of Cold Lake.

Christmas is a time of traditions, and the City of Cold Lake has a few of their own, include the annual Santa Claus Parade.

This year, floats will make their way down main street on Nov. 29 starting at 6 p.m.

Businesses and local groups aren't the only ones invited to suit up and take part in the parade, said Theresa Nickel, community events programmer for the city.

Families are also welcome to join the line-up, however, anyone interested must submit their registration form by Wednesday, Nov. 27.

“You can register your float, either at the energy Centre or City Hall. There are also registration forms online at our website,” Nickel explained.

There is one requirement for participants, and it hasn't changed from previous years.

"The biggest rule is no throwing candy off of the float. We don't want kids running out into the road," stated Nickel. "There has been accidents in the past, not in Cold Lake thankfully, but where children have run out onto the road and they weren't seen by the floats behind them."

Nickel noted it's even more important participants keep this rule in mind because their event is held at night.

"Ultimately it's just for the children's safety and to keep them on the side of the road."

The city isn't deterring businesses and groups from giving out candy, they just ask that you walk alongside the float and hand it to children instead.

When it comes to the route, it's business as usual.

Floats will line-up on the service road in front of the Cold Lake south fire hall before heading down 50 St.

"The time to line-up will be between 5 p.m. and 5:45 p.m... It's first-come first in-line, so whoever shows up first will be first in the parade," Nickel said.

After Santa has made his appearance, families are invited to the Cold Lake Energy Centre for even more Christmas-themed activities until 9 p.m.

"We're going to have pictures with Santa, he will be there. There will also be sparkle tattoos, bouncy castles, crafts, and more for the kids," outlined Nickel, adding they hope families will take advantage of the free event.

"It's our kick-off to celebrate Christmas and to celebrate the season."
