Bonnyville RCMP have arrested and charged Kyle Nadeau after the owner of an apartment building called with concerns.

On Feb. 11, a local apartment owner called 911 to report a male had gone into the building's boiler room and tampered with the furnace.

"He had been burning papers in the room and the complainant was concerned that he could possibly blow-up the building," Sgt. Kim Hillier detailed.

She continued, "This lead to 32-year-old Nadeau being arrested for mischief."

He was released on a $2,000 no-cash bail and is scheduled to appear in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse Feb. 19.

RCMP reminding residents not to leave vehicles idling with keys inside

After seven vehicle thefts over the course of a week, local police are asking residents to refrain from leaving their vehicles idling with the keys inside.

Regardless of whether they're locked, Hillier said criminals will find a way inside.

“The events of the last week would definitely say, do not leave your keys inside of your vehicle while it’s idling. Whether or not you lock the door, that doesn’t make it safe. Criminals will break the window to jump in and steal the vehicle."

In one instance, a resident was getting ready for work when his Chevy Silverado was stolen right from his driveway.

The theft took place on Feb. 11, at around 5:43 a.m.

Luckily for the truck owner, it was equipped with GPS tracking and RCMP managed to locate the vehicle in Elk Point.

Christopher Prudin, 41 of Edmonton, was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.

He has been remanded into custody.

“In -30 C, it’s hard to break ourselves of that habit,” Hillier said of leaving vehicles running.

Also stolen was a Black Ford F350, White 2007 Dodge Ram, a silver Dodge Ram 1500, and a black and white 1999 Ford F250.

“In light of the vehicle thefts being ramped up this week, one of our members intends on preparing information bulletins with the vehicles that are being stolen. In the near future, that’s going to be something we will be requesting of owners, is a photo of the vehicle, so we can get that out there right away and help locate the vehicle,” explained Hillier.

Poor road conditions results in multiple collisions

“It’s important that people slow down and be careful with this extreme cold weather. We had a three-car collision in town, where a driver was unable to stop to make the corner, and then ran into a parked vehicle. The vehicle behind her didn’t slow down enough to avoid, and ran into those two vehicles,” Hillier said.

No charges have been laid in the Feb. 10 collision, however the investigation is still ongoing.

Over the course of one week, RCMP responded to 13 collision reports. Some involved other vehicles, while others were the result of hitting an animal.
