Local RCMP have laid a few charges since the legalization of cannabis.

On Oct. 17 the drug officially became legal across Canada, and since then, Bonnyville RCMP have seen some incidences involving recreational cannabis.

Most recently, they faced two situations involving Lakeland-area youth.

Middle school student brings pot brownies to Dr. B

A Dr. Bernard Brosseau Middle School student is seeing the consequences of bringing marijuana brownies to school after an incident on Oct. 19.

RCMP did respond and speak to the student.

“There are no charges being laid, but the school is going to deal with the youth,” explained Cpl. Pedro Rodrigues. “I think we need to explain to people that despite the fact that marijuana is legal, you still can’t bring it onto school property, and as a youth you can’t be consuming it at all. That was kind of concerning.”

Cold Lake female charged with driving high

A Cold Lake female youth has been charged with driving while impaired by cannabis.

Just a few days after the drug became legal across Canada, Bonnyville RCMP conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle travelling slowly down the highway.

“We stopped and spoke to the driver and it turns out she was impaired by marijuana. That’s noteworthy because it was only two days after it was legalized,” Rodrigues said.

Suspect in farmer assault turns himself in

The suspect involved in the assault of a farmer on Oct. 20 turned himself in to RCMP.

Charges are pending after the accused admitted to assaulting a 60-year-old farmer.

According to Rodrigues, the man had been following a farm convoy heading down the highway when he pulled over. The farmer got out of his own vehicle to see what was wrong when the suspect kicked the truck door, hitting the farmer’s leg.

The victim was pulled from his truck, hitting his head on the pavement.

The investigation is still ongoing, Rodrigues added. “We’ve identified somebody, charges are pending, and they’ve already been arrested and released.”

Woman arrested for trafficking

On Oct. 22, Bonnyville RCMP were called to the Kehewin Health Centre regarding a female who staff believed to be high on methamphetamine.

Following her arrest, police searched the woman and found a couple of grams of the drug, and packaging associated for trafficking.

She has pending charges for possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking.

Police investigating incident involving intoxicating substances

Bonnyville RCMP were called on Oct. 25 to a domestic dispute in town where a young female reported an adult male giving her “some toxic substance” causing her to have some numbness. It also made her sick, explained Rodrigues.

“We’re still investigating,” he added.

No charges have been laid at this time.
