A 29-year-old Elk Point man charged with second-degree murder was in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse last week for a preliminary hearing.

Jordan Hector Soloway pled not guilty to a second-degree murder charge in the St. Paul Provincial Courthouse on Dec. 6, 2016, requesting a preliminary hearing set in Bonnyville Wednesday, June 28 through Friday, June 30. Due to a publication ban, the details of the preliminary inquiry cannot be released. However, it was adjourned on day two of the preliminary hearing and slated to continue starting Oct. 10, 2017.

On Sept. 28, 2016 Soloway was arrested for an incident that occurred 20 days prior. It was on Sept. 8, 2016 that emergency services were called to Kehewin Cree Nation. Fifteen people had witnessed Soloway arguing with a man, punching him and beating him repeatedly after he had fallen to the ground.

The victim, a 32-year-old Kehewin Cree Nation man, was found by emergency crews unconscious and bleeding from his head. He was flown to a city hospital where he fell into a coma. He died six weeks later in hospital as a result of his injuries.

Soloway's charges were raised from aggravated assault to second-degree murder during his court appearance in Bonnyville on Nov. 1, 2016.

He will appear in court for the remainder of the preliminary hearing on Oct. 10, 2017 at the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse.
