Court Report 2

A Myrnam man's attempts to flee police ended in his arrest.

James George Wilgus, 42, was sentenced to pay $1,500 in fines after pleading guilty to resisting a peace officer, possession of methamphetamine, and breaching conditions.

During his appearance in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse on Tuesday, Feb. 26, Wilgus agreed to the facts describing what took place on Aug. 28, 2018.

The Eastern Alberta District Rural Crime Reduction Unit (EADRCRU) was conducting a search warrant in relation to stolen property at a Myrnam residence.

When officers knocked on the door to identify themselves, police observed Wilgus trying to flee by climbing through the window of a motor home parked at the rear of the property.

He was arrested shortly after, and officers took him back to the trailer.

Anyone else who had been inside of the trailer had fled the scene in a vehicle.

Wilgus gave officers permission to search the property, and inside, the EADRCRU located four grams of methamphetamine.

According to defence counsellor Hart Spencer, Wilgus has spent the better part of his life in and out of prison, self-medicating for his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and bipolar disorder.

Honourable Judge Lawrence Nemirsky agreed with the joint submission of $1,500 in fines.
