Bonnyville RCMP will be taking part in an annual awareness campaign over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Operation Impact promotes safe driving behaviours, targeting drivers who are driving while distracted, impaired, or unsafely.

Local police will be hitting the streets from Friday Oct. 5 to Monday Oct. 8, when families are travelling and traffic collisions are more frequent.

RCMP will be focusing on behaviours that put drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at risk, including alcohol and drug impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and seat belt use.

"Our country has one of the highest motor vehicle fatality rates among high-income countries in the world and impaired driving remains the leading criminal cause of death and injury in Canada," said Bonnyville RCMP S/Sgt. Sarah Parke in a release. "Impaired, distracted, and aggressive drivers not only put themselves at risk, but also others with whom they share the road. One-hundred per cent of impaired, distracted and aggressive driving incidents are preventable."

She added, "The Bonnyville RCMP is committed to increase public compliance with safe driving measures in order to save lives and reduce injuries on our roads. We believe it will help us get one step closer to making Canada’s roads the safest in the world."
