The Lakeland Catholic School District (LCSD) board of trustees voted unanimously to loan Dr. Bernard Brosseau Middle School the $138,609 needed for the construction of a new accessible playground.

Principal Vince Spila is thrilled with the news.

"It's very exciting to have the board behind us. I know they feel inclusion is important; it's a big part of Lakeland Catholic. I'm glad they're showing their support."

The decision to grant the school the loan was made during the June 20 board meeting. The plan is to have the new playground installed before the 2017-18 school year starts in September.

LCSD trustees have lifted the ban on international travel, approving two European excursions for the next school year.

Assumption Jr./Sr. High School will be sending a group of students to take in the history of Vimy Ridge. Board members said organizer Shawn Belsher's preparation played a big part in granting approval for the trip.

"This is a trip Shawn has done before, it's not new to him," said assistant superintendent Pamela Guilbault. "The trip is curriculum fit, it's not just a travel club. There are safety and emergency plans in place, and all the proper insurances have been purchased."

Students from Notre Dame High School (NDHS) will head to Italy and will be given the chance to spend Easter Sunday in the Vatican.

While both trips have been approved, the board reserves the right to reverse their decision should situations overseas worsen.

According to May's accountability pillars, the Lakeland Catholic School District is on the right track.

LCSD maintained higher than provincial averages in educational quality, drop out rate, program studies, and high school completion rate.

In terms of percentages, LCSD didn't show any major areas of improvement or decline. Superintendent Joe Arruda said this to be expected when the bar is set so high in the first place.

"If you look at this year compared to last year almost everything has stayed the same or gone up. It's really difficult to improve when you're already very high in percentage - we have to look at maintaining. We have maintained our numbers in 10 categories and we have improved them in five. These are exceptional results," explained Arruda.
