I don’t know how many times I’ve been driving home, seen something interesting and thought, ‘is it worth reporting?’

That’s why, when I learned that the MD public safety department was looking into offering a text-in reporting service, I couldn’t help but think, ‘what a fantastic idea.’

I have always been an avid believer that you should report suspicious activity, but I can sympathize with those who just might not feel like it’s worth calling it in.

Sometimes a vehicle parked on the side of the highway raises red flags, but there’s always that moment of doubt where you wonder if someone just broke down or ran out of gas and is coming back soon.

This is one of those scenarios that, I think, is perfect for the text-in reporting.

The peace officers can look over the information and decide if it’s worth checking out. It also helps weed out some of the repeat calls about the same concern.

As always, with anything new, there will be learning curves.

Remembering to provide enough details in the message is one. You have to answer as many of the “five w’s” as possible.

Otherwise, you’ll be getting a follow-up phone call regardless.

I know it seems obvious, but it’s important to point this out, especially because it’s a method that involves texting. Make sure you pullover when sending the message. Not only will it allow you to concentrate on providing the right details, but you can also get a better idea of the make, model, and license plate information if you’re reporting a suspicious vehicle parked on a rural road.

The other side to this program is the Emergency Alert capability. While I can see it as a great opportunity to keep residents informed, it’s also important that the public remember not to take the law into their own hands.

We have peace officers and police officers for a reason. Let them do their job.

It will be interesting to see how this programming works after all is said and done.

I have a feeling it will be popular among those, who like myself, always hesitate to pick up the phone and make the call.
