The Glendon School 10th annual cake auction will be on Thursday, April 11.

For the past decade, Glendon School’s student leadership group has auctioned off cakes for a good cause, and this year is no exception.

On Thursday, April 11, the annual cake auction will take place in the school gym. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and it will begin at 7 p.m.

“It’s something that we always do to gather our community before our Easter break because what better way to bring people together than cake?” expressed Bailey Kwiatkowski, a teacher at Glendon School and teacher representative for the leadership group.

This year’s themes are “Disney” and “10th anniversary.” There’s no stipulation for anyone wanting to donate, any and all sweets will be accepted for the auction.

“I’m always amazed, not only at the amount of people that come out but, the number of cakes that we get. Some years we surpassed 75, and we have half of the school gym filled with cake. People are going crazy outbidding each other, and it’s just a fun time that people look forward to every year,” Kwiatkowski explained.

Student leadership member and Grade 11 student Janelle Tran is excited but nervous for the upcoming event.

“It’s always kind of nerve-wracking, because you don’t know how many people are going to be there, or how many cakes we get, or how much we’re able to raise,” she said.

The money raised this year will go towards the student leadership group trip to volunteer at Mustard Seed, while the remaining will go towards a member of the Glendon community.

“We’ve always done it to raise funds for someone who’s passionate for the kids at the school, and something that we can also raise money to give back to the school community.”

While they prefer to remain anonymous, Kwiatkowski noted a very important volunteer for the school has come into serious medical issues over the past few months and could use the support.

“We kind of decided, as a school, that this would be a perfect way to give back to them because it’s often very hard to show your appreciation and value to your volunteers. It’s important to our school that we recognize this individual,” she expressed.

Tran agreed.

“He’s just a really big influence on our school, and it’s really hard to put into words. When you think about our school, in a lot of ways, it’s just him,” she said.

Alyssa Blondeau, Grade 8 student, added, “They’re always there to support everybody in the community, and help everybody out.”

Both Tran and Blondeau are excited to see what kind of cake designs are donated for the auction.

Tran added, “As long as we’re able to have fun as a group, and the people there, when they get there, to do all the bidding and see all the cake, that they have a lot of fun.”

Anyone wishing to donate a cake to be auctioned off can deliver it to the school the day of the event before the bidding starts, or the day before.

“We will take anything and everything, and any efforts people make we gladly accept it,” expressed Kwiatkowski.
