Residents in Glendon are headed to the polls after the village announced a by-election is on the way.

On Sept. 25, the Village of Glendon stated a by-election will be held after Coun. Nancy Pelletier announced she would be stepping down.

“As per the Municipal Government Act (MGA), a by-election is being held due to the resignation of our councillor, Nancy Pelletier,” explained Mayor Laura Papirny, adding Pelletier’s stepping aside for personal reasons.

Pelletier has been a councillor with the village for the past five years. Papirny said she’s sad to see her go.

“It’s unfortunate, and she will be missed. We appreciate and thank her for all her hard work, dedication, and many volunteer hours she devoted to the village... We wish her all the best in her future endeavours.”

Nominations for the open seat will be on Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Interested parties can pick up the candidate’s package from the village office, or download it off their website. All applications must be submitted by the noon deadline.

“Basically, we have to hold a nomination day... Hopefully, people will step forward and are willing to step up and run for council,” explained returning officer Crystal Hofer. “Once nomination day is complete, we have an election, if more than one person has put their name forward. If only one person puts their name forward, that person automatically becomes the new member of council.”

In the case of multiple residents submitting their names during the nomination period, Papirny said a forum would be hosted to allow potential candidates to answer questions from residents.

Those considering the opportunity must be 18-years-old or older, a Canadian citizen, a resident of the village for at least six months before nomination day, and is not otherwise ineligible or disqualified.

Interest in being part of Glendon’s council has changed over the past few years, and Hofer noted the number of people have fluctuated since her involvement as returning officer.

“The last by-election the village had only one gentleman come forward. The last election we had, there was a few people. It’s hit and miss. It’s hard to tell how many people will come,” she expressed.

The election will be held on Nov. 19 at the Glendon RCMP hall from 10:00 a.m. to 8 p.m.
