Get ready for another festival full of pyrogies.

The 27th annual Glendon Pyrogy Festival is Sept. 1, at Pyrogy Park from 1 p.m to 4 p.m.

Mayor Laura Papirny said there’s going to be some new events happening this year.

“We’re trying to get a street hockey tournament for the kids, bounce houses, and other entertainment,” she explained.

Papirny said last year’s main draws were the time capsule and the newly renovated Pyrogy Park.

“I think word of mouth has just spread. With the filming of the time capsule, I think that was also a draw.”

She added, the event also gives residents a chance to enjoy the park.

The pyrogy eating contest for adults is scheduled again this year. The youth category has a small change to the rules.

“We’ll be doing the children’s competition a little bit different,” Papirny noted. “We don’t want to do a timed one anymore, due to choking hazards.”

Instead, they will base it around the number of pyrogies consumed. The amount will be determined the day of, and the adult eating contest will still be based on time.

Registration for the contest is free. Anyone interested can sign-up at the souvenir table the day-of.

Along with the contest, there will be a farmers’ market, the Glendon Community Church pie sale, and a homemade vendors’ market happening that afternoon.

Papirny noted the homemade pyrogies are always a draw, and there will be tons available at the festival.

“There’s going to be lots of delicious pyrogies, volunteers have been busy making those.”

Ashley Whelen is one of the volunteers making the pyrogies, and said being part of the community is huge for the local minor hockey club.

“Hockey is all about character, as much as it’s about playing the sport,” she explained. “Getting the kids involved, and becoming part of the community and showing that we’re ready to give back to the community at any point.”

The event is one that’s anticipated by residents of the Lakeland, and visitors are drawn to the village for an afternoon of fun.

Papirny encouraged everyone to join-in on the festivities, and to celebrate Glendon’s heritage.

Live entertainment during the event will provided by the John Appleton Band.

“It’s community spirit, and a time to get out. There will be great entertainment.”
