Cars of all makes and models will be rolling into town to show off their classic and modern style.

The Bonnyville Gear Grabbers will be hosting their ninth annual Show and Shine at the Bonnyville and District Centennial Centre on Saturday, July 13.

President Cayle Scherger said the event is open to everyone.Drivers can register their new or old cars, trucks, motorcycles, go karts, and racecars, starting at 8:30 a.m. the day of the show.

This year, the local car club hopes to hit the elusive 200 registrants. Scherger feels confident they’ll reach their goal.

The Show and Shine is free to the public, and will feature vehicles inside and outside of the C2. Volunteers from the Bonnyville and District SPCA will be hosting a barbecue fundraiser.

The popular mobile dyno will be back once again. The equipment measures the power and torque of a vehicle.

With almost a decade of hosting the event, the club has only seen it grow over the years.

”The community makes it really easy for us to be successful,” Scherger noted. “They’ve shown a great amount of support, not only for attendance publicly and for the cars, but also for the sponsorship to make it happen. It’s a car town, for sure.”

Director Nathan Warkentin added, “I think the success comes from continuing to grow the show into a better event each year, and bringing new ideas and features and becoming an established car show in the area and province. Now that we’re getting into 10 years, people are recognizing it from all over, so it’s drawing more and more people for that reason.”

Registrants will be vying for awards, including best paint job and people’s choice.

Warkentin said there’s a new category called young guns for participants 21-years-old and younger.

”We don’t want car culture to become stale, and to just become a bunch of middle-age old guys parking around in their cars all the time,” he explained. “We’re always encouraging new participation, but especially want to include young people. They’re also car enthusiasts, and they’re the next generation of people that we’re going to need to carry the legacy forward.”

A booth will feature the Gear Grabber’s new drag race timing system.

”We’ll have a reaction time thing where whoever wants to can come up and test their reaction time with the actual tree set-up,” detailed Warkentin. “It’s kind of a neat thing just for people to see the equipment, and what it’s going to look like come race day.”

The drag races will be held at the Bonnyville Airport on Saturday, Aug. 24.
