Every year, the province grants businesses throughout Alberta funding to employ summer students.

The Student Temporary Employment Program offers a subsidy for high school or post-secondary students. It pays half of their wage and encourages business owners to hire youth, which is important.

Not only does working teach them about hard work, dedication, and time management, it shows them how rewarding it can be to contribute to society.

The province offering STEP means that youth looking for work, who might be overlooked because of their lack of experience, are being given a chance, while helping business owners with the cost.

Last year, over 3,000 students were hired through the program, so it’s clear that businesses are taking advantage.

That’s 3,000 youth who may not have had the opportunity otherwise.

With minimum wage sitting at $15 per hour, employers are having a hard time covering the cost of adding an extra set of hands to help out over the summer. STEP is giving them a chance to hire the help and teach a young employee about the working world.

These are skills that youth will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

They could help them with furthering their education or funding work later on in life.

It never hurts to give them a helping hand when it comes to finding their place in the future, and STEP is giving businesses that chance.
