Residents can share their culture with the Lakeland in a new pop-up museum.

The Lakeland Multicultural Association is organizing a Mosaic of Cultures at the Energy Centre from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 25.

"We're reaching out to community members to bring out things that they have from their cultural heritage, meaning if you're from this town, tell us about the history of your town that you have from way back in the day," explained association president Evert Chandra, adding people are welcome to submit anything that tells their story.

The deadline for submissions is Nov. 1.

While anything is welcome to be featured, Chandra encouraged people to bring out "what you pride yourself on in your cultural history."

"It's a way to know your neighbour, to reach out and find out about all the cultures that are in our community and what we pride ourselves on," she emphasized.

When the Cold Lake Museum didn't host their Cultural Heritage Day event this year, the Lakeland Multicultural Association saw a hole was left behind.

"There's so many cultures around here, so much that people have to share. There's just a lack of a platform to do it, as far as I'm concerned. We want to learn about the cultures in our community and we want to get to know everybody a lot more than we already do," Chandra expressed, noting that the event provides the community an opportunity to showcase their culture.

Along with the educational aspect, Chandra also hopes for attendees to form new attachments to people in the area.

"We hope new friendships are formed, that people engage with other community members, are curious about other cultures, and want to find out about other cultures. As a multicultural organization, we want to engage other communities and cultures in the community," she said.

The Lakeland Multicultural Association hopes to make the event an annual one, and to expand it in the future.

"We hope that this is just the start of something bigger and better as years go by. We aren't at the stage that we can say that it's an annual event yet, but if there's enough interest generated that we might think about doing a yearly event," Chandra detailed.

Tables will be provided the day of, along with display cards that can be handed out to those in attendance.

Submissions can be sent to [email protected].
