Cleanup helps but littering still an issue

I am proud to have been part of the Shoreline Cleanup effort that took place in September. We had 257 people take part this year, which is by far the largest turnout on record.

I am proud to have been part of the Shoreline Cleanup effort that took place in September. We had 257 people take part this year, which is by far the largest turnout on record. Enthusiastic students from Notre Dame High School and community volunteers collected huge volumes of trash from the Jessie Lake trail. One of the areas that required the most work was the parking lot across from NDHS -- over 60 people took on that area. By the end of the morning, the parking lot and surrounding area were completely free of garbage. While we were packing up, however, I witnessed somebody shamelessly drop trash from their car onto the parking lot surface in plain sight. It didn't take long for the wind to scatter the contents of the fast food bag all over the place. If this is the attitude that some residents have with respect to littering, then it's going to take more than just an annual cleanup to keep our shores clean.
