The Town of Bonnyville is promising a fireworks display residents won’t want to miss.

Here comes the boom.

After a less than spectacular fireworks show during last year’s Canada Day celebrations, the Town of Bonnyville has ensured this year the fireworks display will be kicked up a notch.

Doreen Kushnir is organizing the event for the town in collaboration with the Bonnyville and District Chamber of Commerce. She explained that the budget from last year’s fireworks display was carried over to this year.

Kushnir said, the town plans on using the extra money to make the most of this Canada Day’s fireworks show, and that it’s a display people won’t want to miss.

“I can guarantee a fabulous fireworks show this year.”

Along with fireworks at dusk, free events will be happening all day throughout Bonnyville to celebrate Canada’s birthday on Sunday, July 1.

Activities start at Sobeys grocery store with a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Opening ceremonies will kick-off at 11 a.m. at the Bonnyville Museum and will run until 1 p.m. An outdoor Church service will take place at the Little Leap Splash Park starting at 11 a.m.

The always popular Canada Day Parade will begin at 3 p.m. Floats will work their way down main street and swing around to go by the BonnyLodge.

“Last year, we had close to 100 participants in the parade,” explained the Bonnyville and District Chamber of Commerce project coordinator, Megan Wakefield.

Anyone can enter a float. The only only requirement is that those involved must be able to sit until the very end of the parade.

Registration is not required. All they need to do is show up at the rodeo grounds at 2 p.m. before being sent through town.

Once the parade has wrapped up, family fun and entertainment will begin at the Little Leap Splash Park, with bouncy castles, face painting, and a balloon and tattoo artist.

Live music will start at 6 p.m., and go until about 10 p.m. Bands include the Campfire Kings, El Niven and the Alibi, League of Wolves, and Clayton Bellamy and Friends.

“There will be good entertainment, fun for the kids, and a good day all around,” said Kushnir.
