Bonnyville is one of the most active communities in Canada.

Residents who take advantage of the many recreational ammenities at their disposal, can now boast their community as one of the best.

In a list compiled by the popular travel site Expedia, Bonnyville comes in at number 14 among the top 21 most active cities in Canada.

Top notch snowmobile trails, and a wide variety of winter and summer sports highlighted Expedia writer Jennifer Cuellar's choice to include the town in the rankings.

"Bonnyville has a reputation of being a popular snowmobile destination. When we were looking for the most active cities in Canada, we turned our attention to this Alberta town," said Cuellar. "With winter sports, summer swimming, and a ton of outdoor resources for its residents, we knew that Bonnyville deserved the limelight."

The article praises the Centennial Centre for all it offers, before turning it's attention to the North Cabin Trail, and Bonnyville Beach. Cuellar also gives a nod to the Peter Kushnir Memorial Ballpark for providing six ball diamonds for all to enjoy.

Representatives of the town weren't surprised to see Bonnyville make the list.

"I bet if they took a closer look and included everything we have to offer, we'd be higher than 14. We have great junior and senior A hockey teams. We have the splash park, and the rifle range that a lot of people don't know about. There are great hunting and fishing areas. It's a very active community," said Town Coun. Ray Prevost.

Comparing Bonnyville to towns similar in size, Prevost added residents here have it better than most when it comes to recreation.

The presence of two high-level hockey teams, and state of the art facilities, isn't usually common in towns just shy of 6,500 people.

"For a small town, the activities that we have are well above other towns this size. If you think about it, you're not going to see a junior team in a town of this size. You wouldn't see the amenities we have, like the C2, either," noted Prevost.

With the summer season just hitting its peak, the timing of the article couldn't be better. Not only will travellers get a look at what Bonnyville has to offer, potential homeowners will be drawn into town.

"This comes at the perfect time, we couldn't be happier. When an active young couple is looking for a new community to call home, something like this makes a huge difference," Prevost expressed.

He expects to see travellers who read the article to circle the town as a destination to reach before summer's end.

Residents may have to get used to sharing some of their amenities with outsiders, now that the secret is out.

"Bonnyville tends to sneak under the radar, so we hope the city doesn't mind if we give credit where credit is due," said Cuellar. "Bonnyville may be one of the best kept secrets in Alberta."
