The third and final phase of the Bonnylodge will start next month after the contract was awarded to Lear Construction Management Ltd.

The value of the contract given to the Calgary-based company is worth about $10-million. By the end of the expansion, the local senior’s lodge will have an additional 46 rooms.

“At the completion end of this contract, we will have 120 rooms in total at the lodge, which will probably accomodate 130 people,” said Ray Prevost, vice-chair of the Lakeland Lodge and Housing Foundation.

Since the beginning of the renovations, there has been a concern with proper funding.

Regardless of the upgrade, the Bonnylodge still won’t be large enough to accommodate the waitlist of people the housing foundation has.

“On the Bonnylodge side, we have approximately 65 on the waiting list, that’s how many people are waiting for accommodation,” expressed Prevost. “We will still have a waiting list (when it’s done).”

The first phase of the Bonnylodge expansion started in 2012, and included 22 lodge beds and 30 compartments. Thirty additional apartments were added on the east side of the building in the second phase.

The project is funded by the provincial government, and was included in the 2016 capital plan, when the Bonnylodge received $10-million for their expansion.

This fund was increased to $13-million last year, meaning the project is now fully-funded and owned by the Alberta Social Housing Corporation.

On top of the increment, the province removed the 20 per cent the local lodge and housing foundation had to pay back over the course of four years.
