Baby, it's cold outside

Last week was without a doubt one of the coldest we’ve seen so far this winter. As I bundled up in a hat, mitts, scarf, and boots, I couldn’t help but think about how I’m able to add layers to stay warm, and yet, pets are being left outside in -45 C.

Last week was without a doubt one of the coldest we’ve seen so far this winter.

As I bundled up in a hat, mitts, scarf, and boots, I couldn’t help but think about how I’m able to add layers to stay warm, and yet, pets are being left outside in -45 C.

There’s that age-old argument that ‘they’re an outside dog, they’re fine,’ but I don’t think anyone or anything is comfortable outdoors in the temperatures we saw.

There was an extreme cold warning in effect for over a week, and I hope pet owners kept that in mind.

I know my beagle Copper didn’t even like hearing the words “do you have to go outside?”

He would rush out into the backyard, do his business, and come flying back through the door so fast you wouldn’t have even thought he had the chance to get the job done.

That to me, is a clear indication that pets need to be brought in.

You hear about it in the summertime when the temperatures are skyrocketing, and it’s just as important in this weather.

Think about it.

Would you want to be standing outside in nothing more than a thin sweater, jeans, and socks? Because for most dogs, I’m pretty sure that’s what it feels like.

Animals can’t speak for themselves. They can’t tell you they’re paws are going numb, or they’ve lost feeling in their toes.

Keep that in mind as they’re standing outside waiting to come in.

I will be the first to admit that my dog Copper is an inside dog. He loves his bed, he loves having his dinner brought to his bowl, and he loves attention.

He is the sheer definition of a pet.

But whether that was his personality or not, I would never leave him outside in these temperatures.

My car doesn’t even like being outdoors at the moment.

Want to know how I can tell?

Because the doors are frozen shut nearly every morning.

If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pets.

Even if they’re used to being outside in all sorts of weather, when there’s an extreme cold warning in affect, that’s the first sign you need to bring them in.

Afterall, they’re a part of your family too.
