There were plenty of spooks to go around for Halloween lovers of all ages at 4 Wing Cold Lake.

A section of 4 Wing's Mackenzie River School was converted into a haunted maze replete with witches, monsters and ghosts to spook even the most fearless individuals at 4 Wing K-9 Club's third Cold Lake Haunt held between Oct. 27 and Oct. 31.

“This community really needs people to do things like this,” said Taylor Forrest, an organizer and vice-president of the K-9 Club. “The more people that put on things like this are what makes a community great.”

When Forrest arrived at 4 Wing three years ago, he was disappointed with the dearth of Halloween celebrations.

“Nobody really gave much of a nod to Halloween,” Forrest said. “Here we are three years later and people are organizing zombie walks, people are doing a lot more on Halloween; there are even more trick or treaters out.”

He added, “I'd like to think we've led change and brought Halloween back to this town.”

Actors donning costumes and heavy make-up rehearsed their parts meticulously to scare both adults and kids prior to doors opening.

Organizers made sure the maze was fit for all ages.

“One of the real hook points that we have for our haunted house…is that we have a magic lantern that scares away monsters,” said Forrest.

“When we have a young kid that might be more liable to get scared, we give them a lantern and this lantern is a signal for our actors to not jump out and scare the people.”

Actors came from all walks of life – both civilian and military. Among them were Canadian Forces members and their children.

Last year the event drew in between 500 and 600 visitors, with donations going to the Lakeland Humane Society.

As of this year, the Haunt will become a base event with proceeds from this event going towards next year's maze.
