CFB Cold Lake is creating a little bit of everything for everyone.

That’s the plan as they continue to build off of their already started outdoor recreation space by the JJ Parr Sports Centre.

Diana Warbeck, senior manager of personnel support programs with 4 Wing, said, “Part of personnel support programs is being passionate about bringing communities together through play and providing fun while doing it.”

That’s why they’ve been tasked with creating a space where families can take part in a multitude of activities.

“The use of outdoor facilities is free to all of the members of 4 Wing and the Cold Lake community. All of the entire assortment of facilities will help connect families together and provide children with activities where they can explore, play, and grow. The aim is to develop an area into an outdoor sports and recreation park that caters to all ages,” Warbeck explained.

So far, the base has built a splash pad, skate park, tennis courts, outdoor skating rink, and an outdoor volleyball court.

They’re wanting to continue with that theme by adding an outdoor fitness park and a playground.

“You can see how a family with children of all different ages, or community members of different ages can come and spend time there and everyone can do something different,” noted Warbeck.

The fitness park, which comes at a cost of roughly $130,000, will include equipment that targets strength, cardiovascular training, stretching, and more.

A chest press station, an area where users can work their abs, a cross-country ski machine, and even a leg press are being considered, however, Warbeck stressed they’re still working out the details with the contractor.

Warbeck said they’re hoping the playground will meet a need within the community.

At a cost of approximately $120,000, the structure will include slides, overhead play areas, monkey bars, and features for imaginary play.

The cost of the additions to the space will be covered by 4 Wing.

Their goal is to have both projects wrapped up by the fall, but it all depends on weather.

“We’re really excited. We’re also looking at building a nine-hole mini-golf in that area and at having our tennis courts resurfaced,” added Warbeck. “Once that’s done, the entire area will be completely used up with outdoor facilities.”
