A tanker driver is left unscathed after his truck hauling crude oil caught fire.

On Friday, Feb. 23, at about 11:40 a.m., the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA) was called out to a tanker fire on Hwy. 41 just south of La Corey.

The highway was closed to traffic as crews worked to put out the flames.

According to BRFA fire chief Brian McEvoy, before emergency crews arrived, the driver of the truck made attempts to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher kept on-board.

“He did try and extinguish it himself, but he wasn't successful,” McEvoy said.

The initial investigation has indicated a ruptured fuel line could have been the cause.

McEvoy said, the broken fuel line sprayed diesel onto a hot object, which is believed to be the source.

“No one was injured and the vehicle was removed from the highway,” described McEvoy.

Once the scene was clear, Carillion sanded any water on the highway that was a result from putting out the fire, which was at the front of the truck, and didn't pose a serious risk to the public.
