Coming off a shootout loss to open the season in Devon, the Bonnyville Sr. Pontiacs came back strong, pounding the Slave Lake Winterhawks 19-1.

The Pontiacs took the lead early in the Sunday afternoon game. Dakota Mason would fly down the wing and beat blocker side the Slave Lake goaltender just under two-minutes into the game.

The Winterhawks were held without a shot until the 7:47 mark of the first period when they were given a power play opportunity and got a shot on net.

With 9:32 seconds remaining in the first period the Pontiacs would extend the lead. A shot was backhanded on goal and found its way into the back of the net.

The Pontiacs continued to apply the pressure in the final four-minutes of the period.

First it was Devon Kalinski, followed by Denis Cadrin, and Lucas Isley.

The Pontiacs led 5-0 after the first period of play and were out shooting their opponent 21-5 up to that point.

The scoring did not stop there for Bonnyville. Just 48 seconds into the second Kalinski scored again and to make the lead 6-0.

Slave Lake finally got on the scoreboard just after the Dillon Kalinski goal. Kirk Ruecker beat Tanner Schalin blocker side with a nicely place shot.

Four-minutes after that Michael Desjarlais scored his first goal of the contest to push the score to 7-1 for the home team.

At the half way point of the game the rough stuff would begin. Some shoving broke out between Kurt Franklin of the Pontiacs and Ryan Coutts of the Winterhawks. The two dropped the gloves and fought. Both players received five-minute penalties for fighting and game misconducts.

After the dust settled Dillon Kalinski continued his scoring touch. He scored two goals in the span of three-minutes to put him at four for the afternoon.

Following Kalinski's fourth goal Craig Cuthbert scored on the power play to make the score 10-1.

Two more goals in the closing seconds from Desjarlais and Mason made the Pontiacs lead 11 goals going into the final 20 minutes of play.

The third period was much of the same for the Pontiacs. At the 1:32 mark of the period Slave Lake would attempt to clear the puck from there own end. The shot would go off of Desjarlais' shin pad and into the net. The 14 seconds later off of the face off Desjarlais came back down the ice and scored again. His third and fourth goals furthered the Pontiacs lead to 14-1.

Two-minutes after that the Mason would score another goal for Bonnyville on the 48th shot of the game for the Pontiacs.

It just seemed the pucks were bouncing the Pontiacs way on this afternoon especially for Dillon Kalinski who scored his fifth goal to make the score 16-1.

With five-minutes remaining in the hockey game Cuthbert scored to make it 17-1 and Mason scored twice more to make the final score 19-1.

The Sr. Pontiacs recorded 66 shots in the hockey game and ran the controlled the pace of the game throughout.

“That was a pretty good game today, I can't complain at all,” said head coach Chad Milnthorp.

The Sr. Pontiacs next home game is Oct. 22 against the Morinville Kings.
