Seven young skippers made the trip from Bonnyville to Kingston, ON for the National Skipping Championship May 19-22, 2017.

First year competitive skipper Janique Dumont broke into the sport in a big way. She earned the right to call herself best in the country after taking home first place in the girls under 10 division.

Until this season, Dumont had been in the Skipperoos recreational one class. Recognizing she could be successful in the sport, Landry and co-coach Skye Christians invited her to join the competitive team.

“She brings a lot of positivity to the team and such a willingness to try,” explained Christians, adding Dumont's energy is unmatched.

Dumont shared the podium in the under 10 division with teammate Isabella Watters who finished in third place.

Rylie and Zenon Landry skipped well, landing just off the podium in fifth place for each of their respective divisions.

Ella Murphy and Taylor Wickland also gave strong individual performances.

The Skipperoos entrant in the mixed boys and girls team division looked to build on the team's individual success. The Joeys, made up of Dumont, Zenon, Watters, Murphy, and Wickland, secured Bonnyville's second national title of the event.

In the Chinese wheel competition, Sarah Luger, joined Rylie in securing the Skipperoos third and final first place finish of the weekend. Luger will return to her home club as she joined the Skipperoos solely for the championship event.

Luger and Rylie later joined forces with Dechaine and continued their success, taking second place in double Dutch speed.

Head coach Carolyn Landry couldn't be happier with her team's performance.

“The bigger clubs are in B.C. and Ontario. They're strong teams and their speed events are very fast. It's a really tough competition,” Landry said. “We're really proud of them to place amongst these bigger clubs.”

Landry added the success of the club isn't all that surprising, in fact, bigger clubs have started to take notice.

“One thing that's really cool is wherever we go now teams are starting to recognize Bonnyville. They know who we are and that we're a good team,” she explained.

From here the Skipperoos will take a bit of a breather, before registration picks up in September.

In the meantime, Landry welcomes any and all newcomers to check out a demonstration to get a better understanding of the team.

“We get out in the community and do demos throughout the year. We feel they really help put the word out and show what the Skipperoos are all about.”

Demonstration and registration information on the Skipperoos can be found at bonnyvilleskipperoos.weebly.com.
