Edmonton Oilers general manager and president of hockey operations, Peter Chiarelli, will be in Bonnyville to kick off the World Junior A Challenge.

His visit will be part of the Co-operators Welcome the World Banquet, which will take place in the Centennial Centre Field House on Dec. 10.

The event will start at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour and then will be followed by a dinner and a speech from Chiarelli.

"We're awfully excited that the general manager of the Edmonton Oilers is going to be deep in the heart of oil country up here in Bonnyville," said Robb Hunter, chair for the WJAC.

Tickets for this banquet can be purchased at Tellier's Drug Mart or Lancer Sportswear.

The banquet will kick off the six-day international tournament where Bonnyville will welcome hockey teams from Russia, Switzerland, the United States, and the Czech Republic, along with two teams representing Canada.

"It's going to be part of the launch of this world class event. We recognize the quality of hockey that is going to get played and the number of National Hockey League teams that will be in attendance to scout it. We were able to bring in the general manager of a national hockey league team to town and we're awfully excited about that," added Hunter.

Peter Chiarelli is a Stanley Cup champion with the Boston Bruins as the general manager back in 2011, and has been a member of the Oilers since April 2015.

"It's a fantastic way to kick off the event. To have someone of his knowledge and expertise and in his position with the Edmonton Oilers, to come to town to really showcase the magnitude of what this event is. To bring him to town, that really showcases how big this event really is for sure," said Richard Wurst, co-chair for the WJAC. "It's just starting to become a realization to everybody that this is a huge world class event coming to the area with all the international teams coming to the area and it's fantastic."
