Glendon School's student leadership group is getting ready to auction off some sweet treats for a good cause.

The annual cake auction fundraiser is set for Thursday, April 6, and cakes are greatly needed. The group is calling on bakers of all skill levels to lend a hand, as the proceeds from this year's event will be going to the family of Randy Horton and Coreen Somers.

The family, which has three children enrolled at Glendon School in Grades 4, 7, and 10, as well as a newborn baby, lost their home in a fire earlier this month. Thankfully, no one was injured.

“We just thought we would rally the community together. The cake auction usually raises quite a bit of money, so we figured that instead of putting it into leadership, which is typically what it goes towards, we would donate it to the family,” said Brittany Norton, teacher and leadership program facilitator. “They're a wonderful family. Even the youngest in the school, in Grade 4, he's part of our junior leadership program and he helps out a lot. It's very personal to this area and to this school.”

The Glendon School cake auction has become a tradition in the community. Last year, around 50 cakes were donated to be auctioned off – a goal that Norton has set again for this year.

With no requirements for the cakes, bakers are free to be as creative as they choose. However, everyone is encouraged to design their dessert around the theme of mother nature.

“The leadership students came up with the idea. It kind of fits in with the theme of springtime and Easter – it's the time of year where everything gets pretty and green again,” noted Norton.

Any cakes donated also need to come with an ingredient list for allergy purposes.

Just like at a typical auction, the night of the event the cakes will be rolled out one-by-one on a trolley as an auctioneer starts off live bidding. While they don't have a goal for the proceeds, Norton said they typically bring in a couple thousand dollars from the fundraiser.

“Usually the money is used for the leadership students to go to the mustard seed or on some volunteer trip. When they heard about what had happened they were more than willing to reallocate the funds to help out the family instead.”

With Norton at the helm, the cake auction is organized by Glendon School's senior leadership program, comprised of about eight students in Grades 7-12. The approximately 15-20 junior leadership students in Grades 4-6 help out with promoting the event, and some even making cakes.

The Glendon School cake auction takes place at the school on April 6, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the auction getting underway at 7. It's open for anyone to attend.

Anyone wishing to donate a cake to be auctioned can drop it off at the school the day of the event, or the day before.

“I'm really excited for it. It's my first year at the school so I've never witnessed it happening before. I was told it's ‘the' fundraiser that happens at the school,” expressed Norton.
