More questions than answers at ministers' breakfast

Jan 31, 2012 03:55 pm

Bonnyville hosted three provincial ministers this past week as part of the cabinet tour, treating them to a delicious breakfast before opening up the floor for a question and answer session that had more questions than answers.

In the spirit of ripping off a Bandaid, Bonnyville Mayor Ernie Isley took the floor first to ask the two burning questions that have plagued Bonnyville for months now.

So just what is the government intending to do about seniors’ housing in the area? And is the government willing to revisit the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range (CLAWR) tax revenue issue before the looming election in a last-ditch attempt to curry favour that may have been lost when all the revenue ended up in Cold Lake and the Town of Bonnyville was left out in the cold?

Unfortunately for anyone hoping to hear actual answers, they came to the wrong breakfast.

According to Genia Leskiw, MLA for Bonnyville – Cold Lake, seniors are still her number one priority and there will be an announcement soon, which is just what was said last time the issue came up and the time before that.

As for the CLAWR tax revenue, once again, we were reassured the “municipalities that were directly involved were the ones that were involved in this discussion and it had absolutely nothing to do with picking and choosing municipalities,” by Minister Ray Danyluk, who was the minister of municipal affairs when the deal was finalized last year.

Clearly the issue won’t be revisited and Bonnyville will have to make its electoral decisions just like every other poor, unfortunate community out there not lucky enough to have an air force base connected to it.

Even if the military supposed to be in the federal jurisdiction.
