Pontiacs preach love of literacy

Jan 17, 2012 06:00 am | MELISSA BAR

Three members of the Bonnyville Jr. A Pontiacs took off their skates and joined a group of children at the Bonnyville Municipal Library this past Thursday to help teach about the importance of literacy and life-long learning.

The event was the first of the library’s celebrity story times meant to foster a love of reading in young children and emphasize the importance of reading from a young age as part of the lead-up events to Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27.

Jordan Krankowsky started things off by telling the children why reading was so important to him.

“I couldn’t drive without it,” he said. “And it’s good for passing time on long bus rides.”

He read Thomas’ Snowsuit before teammate Ty Carey took his place in the story time chair to read another classic, Where is my Hockey Sweater?

Before beginning the story, Carey said, “I just like to read because it’s a fun thing to do, it’s great to pass the time. You need it through your whole life, so stay in school.”

Last, Dillon Currie read Man Gave Names to All the Animals, a book created using lyrics from the Bob Dylan song of the same name.

“Songs are stories, basically, just put to music,” Currie explained.

The library’s final Literacy Day event is Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m.
